    Poland ready to provide medical assistance to imprisoned Saakashvili

    A spokesperson from the Polish government declared on Monday that medical personnel from Poland is ready to go to Georgia to give medical care to Mikheil Saakashvili, whose health has worsened since he was incarcerated.

    The former president of Georgia has been sentenced to six years in prison in absentia in 2016 for misuse of power. Mikheil Saakashvili held office from 2004-2013. Saakashvili and his allies view his conviction as politically motivated.

    Since his imprisonment in October 2021, the medical team for former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has stated that his health has significantly declined. Saakashvili has asserted he was poisoned by the government and has gone on numerous hunger strikes. He is currently located in a medical facility in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

    On Monday, Piotr Mueller, the Polish government spokesman, told a news conference in Warsaw that the medical care of the former Georgian president “is raising serious doubts in the international community.”

    “We are ready to clear up these doubts in this way by directing a medical mission to Georgia,”

    Mueller said.

    He also mentioned that the Polish humanitarian and medical team is prepared to go to Georgia and give medical support to Saakashvili.

    “At the moment, we are waiting for formal consent from the Georgian side,”

    Mueller told reporters.

    At the beginning of February, Mateusz Morawiecki, the Prime Minister of Poland, offered for Mikhail Saakashvili to receive healthcare in Poland.
