Poland embarks on building its electronic reconnaissance fleet, with steel cutting for the second DELFIN ship underway. Strategic Saab partnership fortifies national security capabilities.
On November 15th, a significant event marked the commencement of the second vessel in the DELFIN program at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdańsk. The ceremonial cutting of steel, a symbolic initiation, signifies the beginning of the construction phase for a new electronic reconnaissance ship, named ORP Henryk Zygalski, paying tribute to the Polish mathematician and Enigma codebreaker.
This development follows the ceremonial keel-laying for the first ship, ORP Jerzy Różycki, on July 27th. Both vessels, part of the DELFIN program aimed at enhancing Poland’s defense capabilities, are expected to be delivered to the Polish Navy by 2027.
Strategic Agreement with Saab AB
On November 25, 2022, a crucial agreement was signed between the Polish government’s Armament Agency and Saab AB for the delivery of DELFIN electronic reconnaissance ships. Valued at nearly 600 million euros, the contract involves the construction of two ships at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., with Saab AB providing specialized equipment. The deal underscores a significant collaboration with various elements of Poland’s defense industry.
