The Law and Justice (PiS) Club has demanded an immediate session of the Justice and Human Rights Committee. They want Minister of Justice, Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar, to explain the Ministry’s recent actions and the prosecutor’s office concerning the unprecedented international scandal and violation of international law by arresting MP Marcin Romanowski.
Arrest and International Immunity
On Monday, the prosecution ordered the arrest of PiS MP Marcin Romanowski, linked to the Justice Fund investigation. This occurred despite his immunity as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The PACE chair confirmed his immunity and called for suspension of proceedings. Romanowski was released late Tuesday night.
Calls for Accountability
During a press conference in the Sejm, PiS parliamentarians outlined their next steps regarding Romanowski’s case. They emphasized the unlawful detention of an MP with international immunity and the damage to Poland’s reputation.
Comparisons with Russia and Belarus
PiS MP Jan Dziedziczak stated that ignoring the Council of Europe immunity undermines Poland’s image, likening it to Russia and Belarus. This comparison with countries known for detaining opposition politicians reflects negatively on Poland’s international standing.
