Growing Tatra Chamois Population: A Conservation Success Story

Tatra chamois population thrives at 949, reflecting successful conservation in the region.

The Tatra Mountains are home to a thriving population of 949 chamois, with 312 of them found on the Polish side, according to the latest count by the Tatra National Park (TPN). This fall, conservationists observed 67 young chamois, born in spring, making up over 7% of the total population. Clear skies on October 22 helped the team spot the chamois across rugged terrains, marking this count as one of two conducted annually since 1957.

    Chamois Population Trends

Chamois numbers have fluctuated significantly over the years. From a low point of only 300 individuals around 2000, conservation efforts have seen the population climb steadily, peaking at 1,389 in 2014. Although the current count shows a slight dip from 2023, it remains within a healthy range.

    Stable Yet Elusive Wildlife

While the count is precise, estimating the exact population remains challenging. Chamois often hide in shaded areas or caves, creating a potential 10% margin of error. Yet, the steady numbers underscore the success of long-term conservation.
