During the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) carried out a complex operation on Poland’s highest peak, Rysy. Three hikers, two women and a man, became stranded on a treacherous section of the trail due to darkness, strong winds, and icy terrain. They called for help around 6 PM, prompting an immediate response.
Drones and Determination Save the Day
Due to the darkness, helicopters were unusable. Instead, rescuers deployed a drone to deliver essential supplies, including sleeping bags, heating packs, and hot tea. These provisions helped the hikers endure the cold until rescuers reached them on foot from a nearby shelter. The hikers were safely brought to Morskie Oko shelter around 2 AM.
Lessons in Preparedness
Despite having the right equipment, the group lacked the experience to navigate such challenging conditions. TOPR emphasized the need for proper training, skill, and trip planning. This incident underscores the importance of consulting experienced guides and understanding trail conditions before mountain expeditions.
