Poland Launches Ignis Mission to the International Space Station

Poland has unveiled “Ignis” as the name of its first scientific and technological mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission will feature Polish astronaut Dr. Sławosz Uznański, representing a significant step forward in Poland’s growing role in space exploration. The mission name, Latin for “fire,” symbolizes energy, creativity, and passion.

Innovative Experiments and a Packed Schedule
Uznański is set to conduct 13 experiments in technology, biology, medicine, and psychology, designed by Polish researchers. The astronaut’s rigorous training includes medical certifications and learning to operate SpaceX capsules. His schedule on the ISS is already meticulously planned, reflecting the mission’s ambitious scope.

    Symbolic Emblem Reflecting Poland’s Heritage
The mission’s emblem features a white-and-red eagle, inspired by Poland’s national crest. Its flaming tail echoes the “Ignis” name, while the wings outline the Orla Perć mountain trail. Additional design elements, such as the Sobieski Shield constellation, pay homage to Polish astronomy.

Towards a Bright Future in Space
This mission highlights Poland’s commitment to advancing space technologies and innovation. As Josef Aschbacher, ESA’s Director General, noted, Uznański’s selection from over 22,000 candidates is a testament to his exceptional capabilities.
