“Our organisation has raised PLN 83 million to help Ukraine”, said the Head of the Caritas Poland Fr. Marcin Lżycki PhD on Monday. Since the beginning of the war, Caritas has sent around 500 trucks and buses with donations worth PLN 35 million to those in need.
“Caritas Spes and Caritas Ukraine received half a million zloty from Caritas Polska. Caritas in Poland organises humanitarian transport to Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war, we have dispatched about 500 trucks and buses. The value of the aid is estimated at PLN 35 million,” the priest said.
This included food, hygiene items, power generators, blankets and sleeping bags.
In connection with the support of Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Fr. Lżycki highlighted two fundamental challenges: the reception of thousands of people at the border and the support of those who have moved to Poland.
“In Caritas, there are 1,200 volunteers”, 26 cross-border aid agencies and nun consulates. More than 130 Caritas centres provide refugees with almost 47,000 meals a day. Almost half a million people have benefited from this form of support”, he said.
