At the Warsaw Southern Hospital, a serious mistake is said to have occurred during an in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. According to the website rynekzdrowia.pl, one of the patients was transferred an embryo that was not genetically related to either her or her partner. The facility reported the incident to the Ministry of Health, which has launched an inspection.
According to Rynek Zdrowia’s findings, an embryo belonging to another couple was transferred to one of the patients. The incident is said to have taken place around a month ago, and its cause – as determined by the portal – was a “human error”. In the case of IVF procedures, this is absolutely unacceptable.
According to unofficial information reported by Niezalezna.pl, the mistake concerned patients with the same surname but different first names. The portal reports that the error was detected very quickly by a team of embryologists. As the Southern Hospital informed Rynek Zdrowia, no pregnancy occurred “due to the application of safety procedures”. It was not specified which procedures were used.
“Standard operating procedures were followed”, said the portal’s sources, indicating that “control mechanisms worked”.
As reported by rynekzdrowia.pl, the Southern Hospital reported the situation as an “adverse event” to the Ministry of Health. According to the portal’s findings, the person responsible for the error has been suspended from work.
The Ministry of Health is currently analyzing the submitted documentation and conducting an inspection into the matter.
These are yet another set of scandalous reports concerning the Warsaw Southern Hospital, which has recently been under particular public scrutiny due to events at the emergency department as well as at the mortuary.
“A failure both at the beginning of human life and after death”, commented attorney Bartosz Lewandowski.
