German Police Seek to Fine Lukas Podolski for Pyrotechnics at Farewell Match

Lukas Podolski, the former German football star, faces a possible fine from Cologne authorities for using pyrotechnics during his farewell match. The incident occurred after the match between FC Köln and Górnik Zabrze, when Podolski was seen holding a lit flare while bidding farewell to his loyal supporters.

Footage of the moment was broadcast on television, and images quickly circulated on social media. Although using pyrotechnics in stadiums is illegal under German law, it is considered a crime only if it poses a danger or causes harm. According to local police, no crime was committed, but the incident still violated administrative regulations.

The matter has been referred to the Cologne municipal authorities. A police spokesperson told the German press agency DPA that the necessary documents had been sent to city hall for further action.

The farewell match, which drew a crowd of 50,000 fans, was played in front of a full stadium, despite Podolski having left the club 12 years ago. Górnik Zabrze won the match 5-3.
