Thursday’s talks between Jarosław Kaczyński and Mateusz Morawiecki ended without an agreement, despite what the PiS spokesperson described as further compromise proposals. Later that evening, the Law and Justice (PiS) party announced that its leader would issue a public statement. Jarosław Kaczyński is scheduled to speak on Friday, July 24, at 12:00 p.m. at the party’s headquarters on Nowogrodzka Street in Warsaw.
No agreement after Kaczyński-Morawiecki talks
Thursday marked the deadline set by the Law and Justice leadership for party members to sign declarations confirming they do not belong to political organizations outside the party. Against this backdrop, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński met with the party’s deputy leader, former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, at the party headquarters.
After the meeting, PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek said the talks had been constructive but failed to resolve the dispute.
PiS: Further compromise proposals presented
In a subsequent statement, Bochenek said Kaczyński had put forward new proposals to the group associated with the Rozwój Plus (“Development Plus”) association.
“During today’s meeting, President Jarosław Kaczyński presented a number of compromise proposals, including freezing rather than dissolving the Rozwój Plus association until the parliamentary elections, and transferring all of the association’s activities into the party with its full support. This proposal was also rejected,”
the PiS spokesperson said.
Bochenek added that the talks also failed because, he claimed, Morawiecki did not accept the principle of equal treatment for all members of the parliamentary caucus.
“The talks also failed to reach a positive conclusion because Vice President Morawiecki did not agree to equal treatment of all MPs within the parliamentary club, while at the same time seeking special conditions for his own role within the party,”
Bochenek wrote.
Morawiecki’s allies respond
Following the meeting, PiS MEP Piotr Müller, who is aligned with the former prime minister’s camp, said his group had presented a broad range of compromise proposals aimed at reaching an agreement.
“We presented a whole range of compromise proposals. We extended a hand in search of an agreement and put forward concrete proof of our goodwill, loyalty to our political camp, and responsibility for its future,”
he wrote.
He added:
“We want an agreement, not humiliation.”
According to earlier unofficial reports by TV Republika, Mateusz Morawiecki did not sign the declaration required by the PiS leadership and does not intend to dissolve the Rozwój Plus association.
Kaczyński to address the public
Later in the evening, Law and Justice announced on social media that Jarosław Kaczyński would comment on the day’s developments.
“We invite you to a statement by PiS President Jarosław Kaczyński. Tomorrow (24 July) at 12:00 p.m. at the Law and Justice headquarters, 84/86 Nowogrodzka Street, Warsaw,”
the party said.
Friday’s appearance will be Kaczyński’s first public comment following the unsuccessful talks with Mateusz Morawiecki and the day-long negotiations over the future of the Rozwój Plus association.
