Miners and steelworkers protest in Sławków. Police drag demonstrators out of the crowd

Heavily armed riot police arrived at the site where miners and steelworkers are protesting in Sławków. Union members are blocking the tracks of the Euroterminal during a previously registered protest. Now officers are forcefully pulling participants out of the crowd.

Police officers wearing helmets, holding shields, with smoothbore weapons or tear gas in hand surrounded the union members who had gathered to protest on the tracks leading to the Euroterminal in Sławków. About 200 people are present – miners and steelworkers.

Speaking on their behalf, union representatives reported that they are protesting against the influx of cheap steel from Ukraine and Asia, which is destroying the Polish steel industry.

At one point, the police announced the dissolution of the gathering and called for dispersal. “Otherwise, direct coercive measures will be applied,” the warning stated.

In response, the union members said that the gathering had been registered and that their behavior was not inappropriate. The group was surrounded by riot units, which began dragging out individuals from the clustered protesters who were singing the Polish national anthem.

TV Republika is on site, broadcasting the situation live. Michał Gwardyński reported on air that the protest had been forcibly dispersed.
