Mateusz Morawiecki visited yesterday the hometowns of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. The former prime minister met with the family of the priest brutally murdered by the communists and saw how work is progressing on the museum of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. He wrote: “Thank you to Father Jerzy’s family for the meeting, kindness and friendship that has endured despite the passing years”.
Morawiecki visits hometowns of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko
MP of Law and Justice Party (PiS) Mateusz Morawiecki visited Suchowola and Okopy, the hometown of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. As the former prime minister emphasized, “this is a special place for me. Beloved, prayed-over, full of silence, memories and gratitude. A place I have returned to for years and which always organizes my thoughts”.
“Each of us probably has a place where we feel more strongly what truly matters. For me, it is Okopy. Especially on the 16th anniversary of the beatification of Father Jerzy”, Morawiecki wrote.
The politician recalled that his friendship with Father Jerzy’s family dates back to 1985.
It has already been more than four decades of meetings, conversations, and shared remembrance of a man who did not shout, did not hate, did not seek revenge, yet possessed a strength that an entire empire of lies was afraid of. He met with Father Jerzy’s siblings. He visited the family home where his brother currently lives, and also went to the home of his sister. He prayed at the graves of his parents – people of noble character, deeply faithful and strong in spirit. They raised a son who remained faithful to God, Poland, and truth until the very end.
Mateusz Morawiecki also visited the site where the Museum of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko will be built.
He said he was pleased to see progress on the Museum of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. It is a highly needed place of remembrance, supported by funds allocated by the government of Law and Justice Party (PiS). He expressed hope that future generations will be able to visit and understand who Father Jerzy was, not only as a chaplain of “Solidarity”, but as a man of conscience, because his message is not confined to history – it remains alive today.
“Overcome evil with good” was not just a slogan. It was a way of life and a commitment for all of us, including members of Solidarity and Fighting Solidarity, although in young minds there echoed a paraphrase: overcome evil with struggle. And to this day, it still lingers.
