To help those looking for adventures and quirky stays, outdoor wear specialist, Cotswold Outdoor have revealed Europe’s top destinations for an adventurous and wacky getaway.
The study analysed the average cost of a week’s holiday, the number of alternative and unique stays (using the OMG filter on Airbnb), and the number of adventurous activities available, across 45 European destinations.
Poland is the joint second-best destination for adventurous vacations
Analysing and scoring across three factors, Cotswold Outdoor found that Poland offers the second-best adventurous vacations, beaten only by Norway (and tied with Spain).
Results showed that a week-long adventure getaway in Poland costs an average of £344 (€401), with 100 “adventure activities” listed and reviewed online and 5 “OMG” categorised Airbnbs available for those looking for a quirky place to stay.
Joined alongside Poland in second place is Spain, with an average week of adventure costing more than double that of Poland (£903/€1,052) but offering 1,000 “adventure activities” and 19 “OMG” categorised Airbnbs.
The only nation that came higher in the analysis was Norway, where an adventurous week away costs £653 (€761) and offers 225 “adventure activities” and 22 “OMG” categorised Airbnbs.
Poland is the 4th cheapest adventure destination
Costing an average of £344 (€401) for a week-long adventure, the analysis by Cotswold Outdoor found that Poland is the 4th cheapest destination for those looking for adventure and quirky stays.
Figures showed that Georgia is the cheapest destination of those analysed, with a week costing just £184 (€214). Behind Georgia as the second and third cheapest destinations are Turkey (£189 / €220) and Serbia (£220 / €256).
In comparison, the most expensive destination of the European nations analysed was England, where a week of adventure costs an average of £2,135 (€2,489).
Destinations offering the most adventure activities and novelty stays
Analysis by Cotswold Outdoor found that England offers the most adventure activities, with 2,000 activities listed and reviewed online. Spain was found to have the second-highest number of adventure activities listed online (1,000) while Italy offers the third most (805).
When it comes to novelty stays, the analysis of Airbnb’s OMG listings throughout the 45 European destinations analysed revealed that France offers the most “different” and “wacky” places to stay, with 105 “OMG” listings.
England was found to have the second most “OMG” places to stay (86), while Germany was found to have the third-highest number of wacky Airbnb listings (42).
Methodology To compile the study, we took the number of OMG Airbnbs in each country from Airbnb and the number of activities tagged as adventurous in Tripadvisor. For the weekly budget data, we used Budget Your Trip. All data was collected in July 2023.
