A New Initiative for Forest Protection
The State Forests, under the directive of the Ministry of Climate and Environment, will safeguard key forest areas while initiating field verification and data collection for designating “old-growth forests.” These efforts align with nationwide agreements made during the National Forest Conference to strengthen environmental protection.
Long-Term Goals for Conservation
By January 1, 2026, old-growth forests will cover at least 1% of Polish forests. This share is set to increase to 2% by 2027, ensuring significant ecological preservation on State Forests’ managed lands.
What Defines Old-Growth Forests?
These forests consist of native tree species that have developed through natural processes. Their ecosystems mirror those of undisturbed or late-stage forest habitats, emphasizing minimal human interference and ecological balance.
Why It Matters
Protecting these vital ecosystems contributes to climate crisis mitigation and biodiversity conservation. The initiative represents a responsible approach to preserving nature and securing Poland’s ecological future.
