“Freedom in Poland, after this decision, is completely over,” said Daniel Obajtek, Member of the European Parliament from the Law and Justice party (PiS), in a statement to the portal Niezalezna.pl, referring to the decision by the Provincial Administrative Court regarding TV Republika’s broadcasting license.
The Provincial Administrative Court annulled the contested decision by the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) concerning the license for TV Republika, as well as the resolution passed on June 21, 2024.
The court’s ruling has sparked widespread commentary in the media. Viewers and supporters of what is currently Poland’s largest news station are expressing their disagreement with what they see as a restriction of free speech in the country.
Obajtek: The Nation Should Take to the Streets
Niezalezna.pl reached out to MEP Daniel Obajtek for his reaction to the court’s decision.
In his view, “we’ve reached the point of censorship in Poland.”
“This is no longer just talk—it’s the implementation of a clear agenda. And what can we expect from a coalition that calls itself ‘December 13’? We all know what happened on December 13. These are the offspring of that entire regime. The date is very fitting, given what’s happening now,” Obajtek stated.
According to the PiS MEP, “this is a scandal of international proportions.”
“We are no longer a free country with free media. And even the few independent outlets we had—they want to take those away from us too, and by force. I believe that in this situation, the people should take to the streets, because this should be unacceptable to anyone, even in the so-called ‘smiling Poland.’ I believe that one day, people will be held accountable for this. Freedom in Poland, after this decision, is completely over,” he concluded.
