President Rejects Possibility of Supporting Path Toward Adoption by Same-Sex Couples

“I would not want, twenty years from now, if anything were to happen in Poland, to be the one who laid the foundations for the potential adoption of children by same-sex couples,” said President Karol Nawrocki. He announced that if the draft law on the status of a close person does not include a provision affirming the unique status of marriage, he will veto it.

President Karol Nawrocki addressed the draft law on the status of a close person during an interview on Polsat News.

“I was concerned when I received this draft, in which social support for the proposal was confirmed by 42 radical organizations advocating for sexual minority communities. (…) I would like to resolve this issue, I say this sincerely, (…), but to do so, we must move away from ideological debate. We need to look at the unique nature of marriage,”

he said.

He indicated that if the draft were to include a provision on the “unique status of marriage,” ensuring, according to his words, “reasonable financial and tax solutions that do not carry the same legal capacities as those within marriage, and if all those radical ideological elements were removed,” then he would have “goodwill” toward the proposal.

“I just do not know whether the bill will ultimately take such a form. If not, I will have to veto it,”

he stated.

The President also emphasized:

“I would not want, twenty years from now, if anything were to happen in Poland, to be the one who laid the foundations for the potential adoption of children by same-sex couples.”
