Karolina Pliskova, from the Czech Republic, has withdrawn from the Dubai tournament due to illness. Therefore, Iga Swiatek has gone straight through to the semi-finals without having to play a match! There, she will go up against the victor in the Madison Keys – Coco Gauff clash.
The World No.1, has had a successful start to her tournament in Dubai, winning both of her matches. The Pole defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova with great ease and was due to face Czech Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals. However, the match will not take place.
The organisers stated that Swiatek would progress to the semi-finals of the Dubai tournament without having to compete in the quarter-final round as a result of the 30-year-old withdrawing because of illness.
This is the situation for the second tournament in a row. The quarter-final match against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencić also did not take place in Doha.
The World No.1 will take on the victor of the match between Madison Keys and Coco Gauff in the quarterfinal round. The two American players will compete against each other on Thursday, February 22.
