Tusk Criticizes President Nawrocki Over Budapest Meeting, Sparking Accusations of Manipulation

Prime Minister Donald Tusk published a post online in which he stated that “President Nawrocki’s participation in the Budapest meeting of pro-Russian and Eurosceptic politicians is a serious mistake.” Politicians and commentators pointed out to him that this claim was not accurate. “The Prime Minister of the Polish government is once again persisting in a manipulative narrative. He has probably once again heard something from yet another ‘well-known figure,’” said Rafał Leśkiewicz, spokesperson for the head of state.

Tusk attacks the president again. The backdrop: Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day.

On Monday, March 23, 2026, the President of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok, will arrive in Poland for a working visit. During his stay, he will visit Przemyśl, where, together with the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, he will take part in celebrations marking Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day. A return visit to Budapest is planned for the afternoon.

The announcement of these celebrations was enough for Prime Minister Donald Tusk to launch an attack on President Karol Nawrocki.

“The participation of President Nawrocki in the Budapest meeting of pro-Russian and Eurosceptic politicians is a serious mistake and a confirmation of a dangerous strategy of weakening the European Union and strengthening Putin,”

the head of government stated.

“It is worth explaining this to the Prime Minister…”

Rafał Leśkiewicz, the president’s spokesperson, responded to his post.

“The Prime Minister of the Polish government is once again persisting in a manipulative narrative. He has probably once again heard something from yet another ‘well-known figure.’ It is therefore worth reminding and explaining to the Prime Minister that March 23 has been celebrated for 19 years as Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day. In Przemyśl, there will be a meeting of the presidents of Poland and Hungary, followed by a return visit to Budapest in the afternoon,”

he wrote.

He also reminded that “Hungary is our important partner in the European Union, a member of the Visegrád Group, and a participant in the Three Seas Initiative and the Bucharest Nine.” He also asked Tusk: “You remember that, Mr. Prime Minister, don’t you?”

Tusk’s post was also commented on by former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He stated that what the head of government wrote were “strong words coming from a man who for years pursued a reset with Russia and handed over the investigation of the Smolensk disaster to them.”

“You could learn anti-Russian stance from the President, a man with no views beyond one: to do whatever is decided in Berlin,”

Morawiecki emphasized.

Meanwhile, MP Michał Kowalski wrote: “Primitive propaganda in Tusk’s style. Anyone who disagrees with you is immediately labeled pro-Russian. This is absurd and an act of intellectual sabotage. Political meetings in Europe are something normal, but you prefer to scare people to cover up your own helplessness and lack of any meaningful vision for Poland and Europe.”
