Hubert Hurkacz confidently advances to third round of Indian Wells

The Polish tennis player successfully dealt with Alexei Popyrin in Sunday’s second-round match, whom he defeated 6:3, 6:3. The Wroclawian thus continues his positive series in California, where he has never yet lost his first match in the tournament.

Hubert Hurkacz entered the competition in Indian Wells as one of the last tennis players, but the performance was worth the wait. In 2021, his first opponent at the BNP Paribas Open was Alexei Popyrin, who has been performing well in the early months of this season.

During the Australian summer, he reached the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide, and in the Grand Slam Australian Open, he caused a surprise by beating Taylor Fritz and stopping in the third round. In California, he originally dropped out in the second round of qualifying, but got into the main ladder as a ‘lucky loser’ and took advantage of the opportunity. He defeated Ze Zhang in the first round after a three-set battle.

In the 1/8 final of the Californian event, Hubert will face the revelation of this year’s Australian Open, Tommy Paul. Like Hurkacz, the Melbourne semi-finalist began his Indian Wells appearance in the second round. There, he defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in two sets.
