Poland Considers Closing Russian Diplomatic Posts in Reciprocal Move, Says Presidential Official

Poland is contemplating the closure of Russian diplomatic buildings in a reciprocal action following the shutdown of the Polish consulate in Smolensk, as disclosed by an advisor to the Polish president. The decision by Russia to close the consulate was attributed to perceived “unfriendly, anti-Russian actions” by Poland. The closure of the Polish consulate, which was established in 2011 to foster bilateral relations, is set to take effect on August 31.

In a recent interview with radio station RMF FM, Marcin Przydacz, the head of President Duda’s International Policy Bureau, emphasized the significance of the “principle of reciprocity” in international relations. While Przydacz indicated that Poland has not yet made plans to recall its ambassador from Moscow, he acknowledged the possibility of similar measures being considered.

The remarks made by Przydacz raise the spectre of reciprocal closures of diplomatic posts in both Poland and Russia. Such actions, if implemented, would exacerbate the already strained relationship between Moscow and Warsaw.

No Immediate Plans to Recall Polish Ambassador

Przydacz clarified that there are currently no immediate plans to recall Poland’s ambassador to Moscow. He emphasized that decisions of this nature are always undertaken in coordination with political partners, suggesting a measured approach to maintaining communication channels between the two countries.
