Piotr Jędrzejczyk, a student from V High School named after August Witkowski in Krakow, emerged victorious in the 67th Astronomy Olympiad held by the Silesian Planetarium in Chorzów, Poland. The top five finalists, including Jędrzejczyk, will represent Poland at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Brazil.

Challenging Competition in Modernized Setting:
Organized by the Silesian Planetarium, the nationwide Astronomy Olympiad took place in the renovated spaces of the Silesian Science Park since mid-2022. The competition’s first stage, conducted through correspondence, led to 21 finalists gathering in Chorzów. They tackled theoretical problems, data analysis, and observational tasks beneath the Silesian sky and the planetarium dome.
Top Three Winners:
Piotr Jędrzejczyk secured the top spot, followed by Dawid Chudzik from Warsaw and Andrzej Maroń from the same school. Michał Jagodziński and Krzysztof Nadulicz shared the fourth place. The top five will represent Poland in Brazil.

Poland, one of the founding nations of the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, consistently performs well in the competition. The recent Sunday conclusion of the Astronomy Olympiad marked the culmination of the “Space Week” in Katowice, part of the ongoing celebrations for the European City of Science Katowice 2024.

The Silesian Planetarium, now named Silesian Science Park, boasts the largest planetarium in Poland with a cutting-edge hybrid projector system since its reopening in June 2022.
