Poznań / Chief of the Enigma Cipher Center: We are not a museum

Although the Enigma Cipher Center tells a story, in this case, the success story of Polish cryptologists, we are not a museum, the head of ECC Piotr Bojarski told PAP (Polish Press Agency). The center was opened on Friday (last week) and has been open to the public since Saturday.

The Enigma Cipher Center is located in the city center, in the Collegium Martineum building. Before the war, in this place, there was a branch of the Cipher Bureau of the General Staff of the Polish Army. Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki, and Henryk Zygalski – mathematicians who broke the code of the German encryption machine – worked there. The facility opened on Friday is to serve, among others, promoting the success of Poles and their contribution to the victory of the Allies in World War II.

The head of the Enigma Cipher Center, Piotr Bojarski, told PAP that although during the visit, guests will see many valuable, historical items related to cryptologists and cryptology, including the original Enigma, ECC is not a museum facility.

“ECC was conceived as a heritage interpretation center – the second one in the city, after the Poznań Gate. It is an institution that tells a story – in this case, the success story of Polish cryptologists, but differently than in museums. We use modern tools of communication, at the exhibition we show artifacts, replicas of historical devices, multimedia that explain the world of ciphers and allow us to learn its secrets” he said.
