MEP Szydło warns Brussels wants “democracy shield” ready before key elections

“The European Commission is pushing through the so-called Democracy Shield in Brussels and Strasbourg – a set of regulations that are theoretically meant to protect democratic processes, but in reality destroy them. The EC is in a hurry because it clearly wants to have this tool ready before the elections in Poland and France,” warns Beata Szydło, a PiS MEP.

The “Democracy Shield” – Brussels’ new idea

In November last year, the European Commission announced its intention to establish the “European Centre for Democratic Resilience.” The project was to become one of the key elements of the so-called European “Democracy Shield.” At the time, Brussels argued that modern democracies must confront growing political polarisation, regional and international conflicts, as well as the rapid development of technologies that can intensify both external and internal pressure.

The new body is supposedly intended to help identify threats to democracy and respond to them more effectively. Its task is also to strengthen institutions in the face of such challenges.

“In a world where information is increasingly being weaponised to undermine our democracies, we are taking action. With the European Centre for Democratic Resilience, we will strengthen our ability to counter foreign information manipulation and disinformation. This will increase our resilience, ensure that European public debate remains open and fair, and enable citizens to participate actively in democratic life,”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

“They want to turn EU countries into their private fiefdoms”

New information on the matter was shared on X by Beata Szydło, a PiS MEP.

“A lot is happening in Poland and around the world, while in Brussels and Strasbourg the European Commission is pushing through the so-called Democracy Shield – a set of regulations that are theoretically meant to protect democratic processes, but in reality destroy them. Brussels bureaucrats want a body called the European Centre for Democratic Resilience to be created within the EU. This institution is supposed to function as a kind of EU election commission, capable of interfering in the electoral process in individual EU member states,”

she wrote.

In her opinion, “the EC is in a hurry because it clearly wants to have this tool ready before the elections in Poland and France.”

“The current left-liberal majority in the European Parliament, of course, supports the Commission’s idea. They want to turn the Union and individual member states into their private fiefdoms,”

she concluded.
