PKP Intercity Eyes Double-Decker Trains for Expansion

PKP Intercity plans to modernize with 42 double-decker electric trains, boosting efficiency and passenger capacity by 2030.

PKP Intercity has initiated a competitive dialogue to acquire 42 double-decker electric multiple units (EMUs), marking a milestone in modernizing its fleet. The order, valued at nearly PLN 10 billion, includes an option for 30 additional trains. These EMUs will serve domestic routes, reflecting the company’s commitment to efficient and sustainable transportation.

    Key Timelines and Participants
The competitive dialogue is set to begin in February 2025, with contract awards expected by September 2025. Major industry players—Stadler Polska, Siemens Mobility-led consortium, and Alstom Polska—have expressed interest in the tender.

    Strategic Shift from Push-Pull Trains
Double-decker EMUs, favored for their energy efficiency and operational advantages, replace the earlier push-pull train plans. They align with PKP Intercity’s ambitious 2030 strategy to double train operations and reach 90 million annual passengers.

This initiative is a cornerstone of the “Railway of Great Investments,” aiming to enhance passenger experience and promote sustainable rail travel.
