What a match it was. In the first half, Wojciech Szczesny defended Messi’s penalty kick. The second half, unfortunately, wasn’t so lucky. Argentinians scored two goals, but Poland still has a chance to advance to the 1/8 finals.
Poland entered their third match at the World Cup in Qatar as Group C leaders. However, for promotion to the 1/8 finals, the white and red had to fight against one of the tournament favourites – Argentina.
Exactly 48 years ago, Poland won against Argentina at the World Cup. Back then, in 1974, the Poles won 3:2. Many Polish fans kept their fingers firmly crossed that this scenario could also repeat itself today.
Earlier, Poland drew with Mexico and then won against Saudi Arabia.
Hero of the match
The first minutes of the match were fairly even. The Poles positioned themselves well in defence but lost the ball a little too easily. After the tense situation in Poland’s penalty area, the referee dictated the penalty kick. Messi kicked the ball, but Wojciech Szczesny defended it! Again!
The end of the first half was very tense. The Poles seemed to be tired and gave the ball away too quickly and easily. The Argentinians, on the other hand, started to play very nervously and quickly. Fortunately, there was a draw after the first half.
Unlucky second half
The second half started badly for the Poles. Already in the 46th minute, Alexis Mac Allister literally rolled the ball in. This goal surprised even the Argentinians. However, this was not the end of the problems for the white and red team. The Poles had a lot of problems with organisation and passing. Then, in the 68th minute, Julián Álvarez scored the second goal for his team.
The Poles were unable to take the ball away from the Argentinians. The match ended with a score of 2:0 for Argentina.
Poland, however, still has a chance to advance to the 1/8 finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Mexico won against Saudi Arabia 2:1. The Polish team scored the same number of points as Mexico, so the number of yellow cards will decide on promotion. Poland has fewer of them and so still has a chance of promotion.
Poland – Argentina 0:2 (0:0)
