Polish students excelled at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in the UK from July 14-22, 2024. Among 609 competitors from 109 countries, Polish participants earned six medals, including one gold.
Gold and Silver Success
Konstanty Smolira, from Prywatne Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Królowej Jadwigi in Lublin, won the gold medal with 31 points. Silver medals went to Antoni Mazur (V Liceum Ogólnokształcące, Kraków, 28 points), Mateusz Wawrzyniak (Akademickie Liceum Ogólnokształcące, Wrocław, 26 points), Stanisław Lada (XIV Liceum Ogólnokształcące, Warsaw, 23 points), and Jeremi Hyska (XIV Liceum Ogólnokształcące, Warsaw, 22 points). Michał Lipiec from V Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Kraków secured the bronze medal with 21 points.
Team Performance and Historical Context
With a total of 151 points, Poland achieved an impressive 9th place in the team rankings, tied with Turkey. The USA, China, and South Korea took the top three positions. The IMO, the oldest and most prestigious math competition for high school students, tests problem-solving skills across algebra, number theory, geometry, and combinatorics.
