Zoran Milanović Secures Historic Re-Election as Croatia’s President

Zoran Milanović has won a second term as Croatia’s president, securing a historic victory in the presidential run-off election held on Sunday. The State Electoral Commission (DIP) reported that Milanović garnered 74.66% of the vote, equivalent to over 1.1 million votes. His opponent, government-backed Dragan Primorac, received just 25.34% of the vote.

    Record-Breaking Support for Milanović

Milanović achieved victory in all 20 administrative regions of Croatia and the capital, Zagreb, marking an unprecedented level of support. Despite low voter turnout—44.16%, the lowest for a presidential run-off in Croatian history—his landslide win made him the president elected with the largest margin in the country’s history.

In his victory speech, Milanović thanked voters domestically and abroad, emphasizing his commitment to respecting the constitution. He assured citizens that he would not seek expanded presidential powers. Meanwhile, Primorac expressed gratitude to his party, the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and praised his campaign efforts.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković also commented on the election, congratulating Primorac for his effort and emphasizing the government’s continued focus on serving Croatia, given the limited powers of the presidency.
