Polish PM Morawiecki and US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen discuss Ukraine war

Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland’s Prime Minister, held talks with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Monday during her visit to Warsaw aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia to end its war on Ukraine.

The talks focused on the tightening of sanctions against Russia and strengthening NATO, the Polish Prime Minister’s Office wrote in a press release.

According to the statement, the meeting between Morawiecki and Yellen aimed “to coordinate the international response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine”, and was “a demonstration of commitment to European security and the strengthening of transatlantic ties.”

The statement also said that Poland would continue to call for the further tightening of EU sanctions on Russia, especially in the energy, finance, transport and services sectors.

“Russia should be made responsible for any damage caused on Ukrainian soil. We are deeply convinced that Russian assets frozen by restrictive measures adopted by the international community should be an important source of financing for the future reconstruction of Ukraine,” read the press release.
