As the sun rises on this 15th of August, a sense of pride and gratitude sweeps through the streets of Poland, for it’s a day of significance that resonates with history, valour, and the strength of a nation united. Polish Army Day, a day dedicated to honouring the soldiers who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the homeland, has dawned once again, reaffirming the words, “A strong Poland is a guarantee of freedom.”
On this occasion, wishes and thanks flow abundantly toward the brave soldiers whose unwavering commitment secures the safety of the nation. The Polish uniform, symbolizing resilience and duty, takes centre stage as the bedrock of the celebrations. It is a day when the heart of the nation beats in sync with those who wear this uniform with honour and pride.
This day holds a historical resonance that goes beyond the present, reaching back to the annals of time. It was on the 15th of August, a hundred and three years ago, that a pivotal battle unfolded, securing victory for Poland in its conflict against Soviet Russia in 1920. This historic triumph paved the way for the establishment of Polish Army Day in 1923, a celebration that persisted until 1947 and was later reinstated in 1992.
Former Prime Minister Szydło aptly highlighted the significance of this historical moment. “In 1920, the Poles repulsed the invasion of Bolshevik Russia and defended Polish independence thanks to the efficient building of a strong army,” she emphasized. The people’s unwavering support for the Polish Army was evident then, and it holds true even now. The very essence of a free and safe Poland is intertwined with the existence of a formidable Polish Army.
However, the challenges of today are not dissimilar to those faced a century ago. The spectre of Russian imperialism still looms, threatening both Poland and Europe. Acknowledging this persisting threat, the Polish government has embarked on a monumental effort to modernize and arm the Polish Army. The commitment to equipping Polish soldiers with the most advanced weaponry and equipment is a testament to the nation’s determination to secure its future.
In the spirit of unity, global partners join in commemorating the Polish Army Day. United States Ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski, expressed his appreciation for the soldiers, underscoring the significance of military cooperation in the Polish-American relationship. “Our soldiers stand shoulder to shoulder defending our freedom and our shared values,” Brzezinski remarked, emphasizing the deep bond between the two nations. The presence of US troops in Poland serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment to alliance obligations.
The celebration of Polish Army Day brings to mind the words of Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, words that remain as relevant today as they were then: “Force without freedom and justice is only violence and tyranny. Justice and freedom without force is verbosity and childishness.” These words hold particular weight as conflicts persist in various parts of the world. In a world where power and principles must coexist, the Polish Army stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to defending justice, freedom, and sovereignty.
