Polish-Canadian Partnership to Build SMRs in Poland

Polish-Canadian partnership aims to build Poland’s first Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) using BWRX-300 technology, enhancing energy security and reducing CO2 emissions.

Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE), along with Canadian firms Aecon and AtkinsRéalis, and GE Hitachi, are advancing the construction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Poland, using the BWRX-300 technology. The first reactor is expected to be operational by the early 2030s.

OSGE’s partnership with GE Hitachi, Aecon, and AtkinsRéalis leverages their experience from the Darlington project in Canada, where Ontario Power Generation is building the first BWRX-300 reactor. This collaboration ensures Poland benefits from the cutting-edge expertise of these industry leaders.

The BWRX-300 reactors are projected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and coal usage, avoiding 176 million tons of CO2 and 65 million tons of coal over six decades. Additionally, the project will bolster the Polish economy, generating over 24 billion PLN in gross value added and creating 2,700 new jobs.

This initiative also enhances Polish-Canadian relations, reinforcing energy security and contributing to global climate goals. The collaboration exemplifies the tangible outcomes of international cooperation in the energy sector.
