The President of the Institute of National Remembrance for “Gazeta Polska”: The crimes of the 1980s must be judged

Dr. Karol Nawrocki, the new President of the Institute of National Remembrance, in an interview for “Gazeta Polska” announced the completion of the investigations from the 1980s, which may have an impact on the quality of today’s social life.

“This is one of my ideas for cooperation with the Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation – reverse the chronology of proceedings. Finish those from the 1980s, which may have an impact on the quality of social life even today. Many people are still waiting for transformational justice,” declares Karol Nawrocki in conversation with Katarzyna Gójska.

The President of the Institute of National Remembrance admits that he has the impression that the prosecution of communist crimes is very slow.

“I’ll do anything to change that,” he assures.

“I believe that the exclusion of the prosecution division from the Institute of National Remembrance will not solve the case of the effectiveness of investigations from the time of both totalitarian regimes. The institutional egoism and lack of influence of the President of the Institute of National Remembrance on the activities of the Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation suggest that, for the comfort of my work, prosecutors should be outside the Institute of National Remembrance. On the other hand, logic and responsibility towards the victims of communism and nazism suggest that if not the Institute of National Remembrance, no one will pursue these crimes,” he emphasizes.
