Stosław Kowalski, one of the last soldiers of the 2nd Polish Corps and a participant in the Battle of Monte Cassino, passed away in Buenos Aires at the age of 102. The battle in 1944, in which Kowalski fought bravely, was crucial in opening the way for the Allies to Rome. Just a month ago, Major Kowalski participated in anniversary celebrations in Italy and Poland.
A Life Dedicated to Freedom
Born on July 21, 1922, Kowalski was deported to the USSR during World War II. After leaving Soviet Russia, he joined the 2nd Polish Corps, serving in the 5th Kresowa Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment and the 5th Kresowa Infantry Division, fighting against the Germans in Italy. After the war, he emigrated to Argentina.
Honored Legacy
Kowalski was honored with numerous medals, including the “Pro Patria” Medal, the “Defender of the Homeland 1939-1945” Medal, and the Gold Medal for “Merit for National Defense.” His death was announced on government websites and social media by the Institute of National Remembrance.
