Farewell to Polish-American Officer Killed by Drunk Driver

A solemn funeral was held Saturday for Officer Emilia Rennhack, who tragically lost her life in a drunk driving incident. Rennhack, a member of the NYPD, was one of four fatalities caused by a driver who crashed into a Deer Park beauty salon.

Emilia Rennhack, née Kowalczyk, emigrated from Poland to the United States with her family at the age of 12. At the funeral, held at New Hyde Park Funeral Home, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer, joined numerous colleagues to pay their respects.

“She wanted to make our city safe so others could follow the same dream. This is a tragic accident. It’s a sad day for the entire force. Emilia was one of our beloved officers at the 102nd Precinct in Queens. She worked on domestic violence prevention and went above and beyond in her community service. We will miss her dearly,” stated Mayor Adams.

Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association, praised Rennhack as an exceptional person and officer. Having served in the police force for five years since graduating from the academy, she was recently honored as “Officer of the Month.” Her husband, Carl Rennhack, is also a detective in the same precinct. The couple married last year.

    Tragic Incident Claims Lives

The fatal accident occurred on June 28 when 64-year-old Steven Schwally, driving under the influence, lost control of his SUV, crashing through the salon’s storefront. The incident resulted in the deaths of three women and one man, and injured nine others, including a 12-year-old girl.

Schwally has been charged with driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident, with further charges expected. According to CBS News, Schwally admitted to drinking 18 beers the night before the crash. He had a prior conviction for DUI a decade ago. His bail has been set at one million dollars.
