Polish tennis player Iga Świątek has earned her place in the quarterfinals of the Olympic tennis tournament. Overcoming a challenging second set, Świątek defeated China’s Xiyu Wang with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4.
The match began with Wang in strong form, putting early pressure on Świątek. Wang had two break points in Świątek’s second service game but failed to convert them, and another in the following game, which Świątek defended with aggressive play. Świątek then took her first break point chance and maintained a high level of performance, winning the first set 6-3 with a mix of solid defence and impressive offence.
In the second set, Świątek started strong by breaking Wang’s serve early, but the set soon became more competitive. The following game was highly contested, with several deuces before Wang broke back. The exchange of breaks continued, and after Wang lost her serve again, she took a medical timeout and returned with her thigh bandaged. Despite the injury, Wang quickly broke back, showing resilience. Świątek then served for the match, with Wang saving the first match point and forcing a breakpoint. However, Świątek handled the pressure and secured her quarterfinal spot on her second match point.
Świątek’s quarterfinal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31. The precise time is yet to be confirmed, as it will be the third match of the day on Suzanne Lenglen Court, but it is expected to start around 3:00 PM local time.
