The temporary bridge over the Biała Głuchołaska River, along National Road No. 40, is set to open for use by October. After the September flood destroyed two bridges, efforts to rebuild the crossing started quickly, with the army installing a temporary structure last Friday. This interim solution is critical for local traffic.
Challenges of the Flood
During the flood, a temporary bridge was swept away, damaging the construction of a permanent bridge. Tons of debris had to be cleared from the riverbed before any rebuilding could commence. The installation of two DMS-65 bridges, provided by the Strategic Reserves Agency, marked a major milestone in the recovery process.
Głuchołazy’s mayor, Paweł Szymkowicz, emphasizes the importance of learning from this disaster. He suggests future bridge designs should avoid features that might obstruct water flow, as this contributed to the September damage.
The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways is considering these insights, although final decisions are yet to be made. Designing a flood-resistant structure will be key to ensuring the town’s safety.
