Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki urged the current government to immediately block the EU migration pact and hold a referendum on accepting illegal migrants. His remarks come in light of the migration pact gaining momentum after a change in power in Poland.
Morawiecki’s tenure is remembered for his efforts to curb the implementation of the EU’s relocation mechanism, which had been under discussion since 2014. Under his leadership, Poland resisted the European Union’s push to redistribute migrants across member states, which he secured through a coalition at the European Council in June 2018. This resistance became known as the “Morawiecki anchor,” ensuring that the relocation mechanism would remain voluntary.
However, following Donald Tusk’s return to power, the EU migration pact has advanced. In 2024, key decisions to fast-track the relocation system were made, with Tusk even accepting the rapid implementation of these mechanisms in October 2024. Despite Tusk’s rhetoric of suspending asylum rights, his stance in European Council discussions seems to support accelerating migration policies.
