Carbon monoxide poisoning kills silently. Learn safety tips to protect your home and loved ones from this invisible threat.
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning has claimed 12 lives and injured 255 people in Poland since October, according to the State Fire Service (KG PSP). Firefighters have responded to 655 CO-related incidents. The KG PSP urges the public to install CO detectors, particularly when using gas or coal heating systems, positioning them 70-100 cm from the floor.
Why Is CO So Dangerous?
Known as the “silent killer,” carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It binds to hemoglobin over 200 times more effectively than oxygen, severely impairing the body’s oxygen supply. High exposure can cause neurological damage, cardiac failure, or death.
Preventing CO Poisoning
Experts recommend installing CO detectors, ensuring proper ventilation, and regularly inspecting chimneys and heating systems. Avoid covering ventilation grates and keep rooms well-ventilated. Symptoms of poisoning include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Seek immediate medical help if suspected.
Protect your household by following these precautions. A simple CO detector can save lives and prevent irreversible health consequences.
