    We have the first World Cup of chess. Grandmaster Jan Krzysztof Duda triumphant

    Grandmaster Jan Krzysztof Duda became the first-ever Polish winner of a chess World Cup tournament after his win over Russian Sergey Karjakin in the return leg of the final. Thursday’s duel, in which he played the white, ended after 30 moves.

    “I also think that I still haven’t got over a bit of what happened and it’s only in a few hours that I’ll have that real burst of euphoria,” Jan-Krzysztof Duda told RMF FM shortly after his historic victory. 

     

    Earlier, the 23-year-old grandmaster became the first Pole to secure his promotion to the candidate tournament, winning in the semifinals after extra time against world champion Magnus Carlsen. The Norwegian was the first to congratulate him on his success right after the final match in Sochi.
