“Efforts to have Poland participate in Nuclear Sharing have been going on for a long time at unofficial levels, so far there has been no positive response. Nowadays, we have the State Department’s response, which consists of two important sentences,” Tomasz Sakiewicz, editor-in-chief of “Gazeta Polska” and “Gazeta Polska Codziennie”, said during the IX Congress of “Gazeta Polska” Clubs from the USA and Canada.
The IX Congress of “Gazeta Polska” Clubs from the USA and Canada began today in Savannah, lasting until Sunday. During one of the first speeches, Tomasz Sakiewicz, editor-in-chief of “GP”, referred to the famous interview with President Andrzej Duda, which was published in “Gazeta Polska” last Wednesday. One of the most important topics raised in this conversation was the issue of Poland’s participation in Nuclear Sharing.
“We discussed with American leaders whether the United States is considering such a possibility or not. The topic is open,” said Polish President Andrzej Duda in an interview with Gazeta Polska. The interview has been spread around the world.
Nuclear Sharing is the North Atlantic Alliance’s concept of sharing nuclear warheads with NATO member states that do not have them.
“Any aggressor has to reckon with the fact that it is attacking a country that has a nuclear weapon and is part of the US nuclear umbrella infrastructure. Since Russia is already directing threats of nuclear attack against NATO and Poland, it is high time that efforts began. These efforts have been going on for a long time at unofficial levels, but so far there has been no positive response. Nowadays, we have the US Department of State’s response, which consists of two important sentences,” said Tomasz Sakiewicz.
“The first is that ‘for the time being’ there are no plans to deploy nuclear weapons of NATO states that were formerly in the Soviet sphere. On the one hand, this is unpleasant for us, because further distinctions are made between these spheres, the former states of the Soviet sphere and the states that were not in it, i.e. they take Russian aspirations and fears into account. But the second sentence is much more positive – that ‘they are watching the changing situation and will react according to the situation’. What does this mean? It means that they told Putin: “Until now we have taken your aspirations into account, but we can stop taking them into account and we will send nuclear weapons to Poland”. This is how it should be read: if an escalation scenario keeps going, the US will start assembling nuclear warheads on Polish territory. I am sure of that,” he added.
According to Tomasz Sakiewicz, an escalation scenario could give Poland the highest level of defence possible in NATO. – This moment should be won (by Poland – ed.), he stressed.
Friday, the first day of the congress, was mainly devoted to club matters and selected issues concerning the national situation. On Saturday, the open conference will be attended by, among others, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the UN, Ambassador Professor Krzysztof Szczerski, Senior Speaker Antoni Macierewicz and Piotr Naimski, Government Plenipotentiary for Polonia and Poles Abroad Jan Dziedziczak and Adrian Kubicki, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in the USA. On the last day, Sunday, the Convention participants will take part in the anniversary of the Battle of Savannah and a solemn Mass.
