Charges for Defacing Historical Memorial
A 76-year-old woman has been charged for defacing a memorial plaque honoring the victims of the Wola massacre, an atrocity committed by German forces during WWII. The Warsaw Metropolitan Police reported that the woman faces charges of insulting the monument, which can result in a fine or restriction of liberty. The damaged plaque, created by Karol Tchorek, is located at the intersection of Wolska and Płocka Streets and commemorates mass executions at the former Ursus factory.
Community Leaders Condemn Vandalism
The defacement was first reported by Wola District Mayor Krzysztof Strzałkowski, who shared images of the damage on social media. “What kind of mindset does it take to do this? Such disgrace and shame,” Strzałkowski expressed on Platform X. He assured the public that the plaque would be restored promptly. Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski also condemned the act, highlighting the significance of the memorial, which has since been cleaned by a specialized firm. Authorities continue to investigate, seeking witnesses to the crime.
