Wuzetka cake, a beloved Polish dessert, features cocoa sponge, whipped cream, and chocolate glaze with a rich history from 1950s Warsaw.
Wuzetka, or “W-Z cake,” is a classic Polish dessert, consisting of two layers of cocoa sponge cake filled with whipped cream and marmalade. The cake, covered with chocolate glaze and topped with a dollop of cream, became popular in the 1950s. Its name likely derives from the Warsaw W-Z route, near which the dessert was first made. Another theory suggests that “WZ” stands for “wypiek z czekoladą” (baked with chocolate) or “Warsaw Confectionery Works.”
Wuzetka is known for its rich, moist sponge cake, often soaked in a light punch made of rum and sugar. Originally, it was only available in selected Warsaw cafés, but its recipe spread nationwide in the 1970s. The cake is now a staple in Polish confectioneries, cherished for its simple yet elegant flavor combination. On May 23, 2023, Wuzetka was officially recognized as a traditional product in the Mazowieckie region.
