“No one bothered to come out to representatives of Solidarity – the trade union that fought for the whole of Europe to be free and led to the fall of communism – and collects our petition,” said Wojciech Ilnicki, chairman of the Solidarity Trade Union of the Turów Mine, after Friday’s demonstration at the seat of the EU Court of Justice. According to a trade unionist – the CJEU has shown a pathetic spectacle.
Friday’s protest in Luxembourg was peaceful. The protest was in opposition to the decision of the CJEU, which in May – responding to a request from the Czech Republic – ordered an immediate halt to mining at the Turów mine. According to the organizers, just over 2,000 people took part in the demonstration. Trade unionists demonstrated in front of the seat of the CJEU, from where they marched to the Czech embassy in Luxembourg.
The chairman of NSZZ Solidarność KWB Turów Wojciech Ilnicki said that “the CJEU has shown a pathetic spectacle”.
“No one bothered to come out to the representatives of Solidarity – the trade union that fought for the whole of Europe to be free and led to the fall of communism – and receive our petition, and we were, humanly speaking, sorry,” the trade unionist said.
He added that the trade unionists had posted on the fence in front of the CJEU “a resolution to close the Court”. “In turn, we threw the petition to them over the fence,” he said.
The union official also said that the ambassador came out to the protesters in front of the Czech embassy and collected their petition.
“We wrote in it that we want friendship with the Czechs and for the Czechs to get along with us. We don’t want to talk to the Czechs through the CJEU. The ambassador came out and listened to our arguments,” Ilnicki said.
