Captain Władysław Raginis was a Polish military commander during the Polish Defensive War of 1939 of a small force holding the Polish fortified defense positions against a vastly larger invasion during the Battle of Wizna. EuroSkills Gdansk 2023 is scheduled to take place between 5-9 September 2023 at AMBEREXPO Gdańsk. It is the first such large international event transferred to Poland in connection with Russia's aggression against Ukraine. EuroSkills is an international competition that has so far been held 7 times, and next year Poland will host it for the first time. Poland expects to welcome 600 skilled young professionals from 31 countries to the event to participate in competitions and host demonstration events in 45-50 different skills. The team of KGHM Polska Miedz SA mine rescuers has just left for the USA, where they will take part in the International Mines Rescue Competition. In previous years, KGHM rescuers won, among others, bronze and gold medals. This year's International Mines Rescue Competition is set for September 9-16, 2022.
In 2011, the International Conference “Europe of the Carpathians” became part of the Economic Forum in Krynica Zdrój. Leonid Hurwicz was a Polish-American economist and mathematician, known for his work in game theory and mechanism design. He started working on mechanism design theory in the 1960s. The theory allows us to distinguish situations in which markets work well from those in which they do not. It has helped economists identify efficient trading mechanisms, regulation schemes and voting procedures. He shared the 2007 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (with Eric Maskin and Roger Myerson) for having laid the foundations of mechanism design theory. Hurwicz was one of the oldest Nobel Laureates, having received the prize at the age of 90.
Wisława Szymborska was a Polish poet, essayist, translator, and recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature. She was born in Prowent (now part of Kórnik), about 25 kilometers (16 mi) southeast of the city of Poznań. Then, she lived in Kraków until the end of her life. In 1945, she began studying Polish literature before switching to sociology at Jagiellonian University. There, she became involved in the local writing scene and met Czesław Miłosz. Szymborska said once that Miłosz was one of the first people to congratulate her on the Nobel Prize in October 1996. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1996 was awarded to Wislawa Szymborska "for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality".
Jerzy Charpak, also known as Georges Charpak, was a Polish-born French physicist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention and development of particle detectors, in particular the multiwire proportional chamber in 1992. Charpak's family moved from Poland to Paris when he was seven years old, beginning his study of mathematics in 1941 at the Lycée Saint Louis. The actor and film director André Charpak was his younger brother.
